When I click on directions, it wants me to type an address. If I start typing the addr of my default location, it doesn't autocomplete or even list it among the choices until I've typed most of it. In google maps click "My places" then assign "home" address. Next time you're searching for directions you can simply begin typing "home" into one of the direction fields and it will load your home address. Presumably this works with your "work" location as well. Once the location is loaded on Maps, tap on the directions icon to get various navigation options.
Getting directions using Google Maps My Location
Typing "Home" will bring up the option to set it as your Home location. In the Google Maps iPhone or Android app, tap Saved at the bottom-center of the screen. Find all your maps in the Your Places menu on Google Maps. To add a stop, choose another destination. You can add up to 9 stops.

As you would tap on it, the interface will display a dotted-navigation path to the designated place. For this, the initial steps are the same as above. That is, you have to launch Google Maps and enter the name of the location you need to visit. If you want to see someone else's location, tap that person's icon at the top of the window and then tap Request.
You can get directions to multiple destinations for all modes of transportation except public transit or flight. You can get directions for driving, public transit, walking, ride sharing, cycling, flight, or motorcycle on Google Maps. If there are multiple routes, the best route to your destination is blue, all other routes are gray. Some directions in Google Maps are in development and may have limited availability. When I go to Google Maps, it shows my default location. Often I then search/find a location/address and then want to get Directions from my default location, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to do that.
