Six new players have been named for the GOLDEN HOMES NEW ZEALAND BLACK SOX’S next tour - but head coach Mark Sorenson and some of his senior world champions are taking time out. The seven time World Champion Black Sox will take on Team Europe, 2nd September in an exhibition game prior to the Men’s European Super Cup, 3-8 September. The Super Cup solely for European club teams will feature a number of Black Sox players who have been picked up as guest players to help bolster the chances of European club sides. Watts who pitched his club side Papanui into the final of the National Open Clubs tournament last March is an exciting talent and another pitcher that can bring plenty of heat to the pitching roster. The Black Sox who already possess a world class pitching line up will further that depth through Watts’ inclusion. The camp will focus on establishing a strong understanding of the year ahead, and what players need to be working on.
Defensively, the players also showed their class, with the Wellington selection finding their chances limited. More importantly for Kohlhase, it was an opportunity for the national players to get some game time together. “There were a whole lot of guys who had played seven or eight games, but we told them we had to replicate a world tournament, and we just had to get out there and play,” said Kohlhase. "He hit every game on the weekend and played a bit in the field, so we're really confident." With several players selected injured in December, coach Eddie Kohlahse set last weekend as the deadline for them to prove their readiness for the tournament at Rosedale Park and Casley was the last to achieve that goal.
